THE ALBERTINA Museum
The ALBERTINA Museum in Vienna combines more than 600 years of art history with the character of a modern museum. At its heart is its own collection, which has grown continuously since its historic foundation by Duke Albert of Saxony-Teschen and Archduchess Marie Christine in 1776 and today encompasses all major artistic media. Its diverse exhibition program brings together works from the museum’s own holdings with major international loans, reflecting the breadth and significance of the collection. Today, ALBERTINA is represented by three locations: the historic palace in the heart of Vienna with its magnificent State Rooms; the Albertina Modern in the former Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz, dedicated to modern and contemporary art; and Albertina Klosterneuburg, which offers visitors an insight into the museum’s extensive contemporary art holdings. Under the motto “Albertina for everyone,” the museum sees itself as an open and vibrant place of cultural exchange, inviting a broad audience to discover and experience art through special exhibitions, educational programs and digital formats.

Who are Albert & Tina?
The story behind the name ALBERT&TINA is closely connected to the origins of ALBERTINA itself. Archduchess Marie Christine of Austria, affectionately called “Mimi” by her mother Empress Maria Theresa, was one of the few Habsburg daughters who was allowed to choose her own husband. In 1766, she married Duke Albert of Saxony-Teschen, and unlike many dynastic marriages of the time, theirs is considered to have been a loving and happy union. Albert was a passionate art collector, and together the couple laid the foundations for the extraordinary collection that would eventually become the heart of today’s ALBERTINA. After Marie Christine’s death in Vienna in 1798, Albert commissioned Antonio Canova to create a memorial for her in Vienna’s Augustinian Church, dedicated to his “uxori optimae,” meaning “best wife.” Albert’s collection became his lasting legacy to Vienna and gave ALBERTINA its name. Centuries later, ALBERT&TINA brings their names together again, celebrating art, music, drinks and summer evenings on the historic Albertina Bastion.
